Home / Greenshops :: About Us
To provide education through products, programs, and services that empowers individuals, businesses, and organizations to make decisions that are good for people and the planet.
To provide a shopping experience with exceptional customer service and quality products for those looking for the eco-alternative to everyday products in their lives.
Our products are not only good for the environment but also for our customers’ well being. We are committed to supporting a green supply chain and selling products that we feel are truly green – meaning we sell products that meet various green criteria and are produced by manufacturers who also are committed to sustainability practices in their production and delivery of goods.
At Greenshops, not only do we sell eco-friendly products from eco-friendly manufacturers, we try to live and breathe green in our daily operations and personal lives. We continually look for ways to reduce waste, conserve energy, and minimize the amount of resources we use. Here are some of the ways we are lessening our own impact:
• Our gift-wrapping materials and bags are made from 100% recycled content and though we try not to include packing slips or invoices in our boxes, if we do need to we use 100% recycled content paper.
• For those that want registry cards or gift messages, we use Elephant Pooh paper – paper made from Elephanyt Dung in Sri Lanka as part of a program started by Dr. Carl to save elephants from being killed for agriculture and create economy for a renewable resource.
We believe a huge part of living green is not just being green on the inside, but also making a difference to others.
• We have been Certified as a Women's Business Enterprise.
• We also support many local, national and global non-profits and organizations in various ways. We have organized a Feed the Homeless day, where we feed approximately 200 people, participated with the Girl Scouts with their Eco Pin, donated our time at College Entrepreneur day events and work with disabled children organizations – to name a few.
• We are active members on the Keep Bakersfield Beautiful recycling and educational committee, working hard to create a better local environment.
• We contribute to the annual Make a Difference day event where we have also gotten our hands dirty by picking up trash, planting trees and painting mail boxes to remove graffiti.
• Greenshops has created a line of products from recycled fence post. These products include planter boxes and picture frames created by the wonderful people at BARC. In 2010, we received an award for our contributions to BARC's woodworking department.
• We provide weekly resources for living green on the Eyewitness News every Friday morning at 6 am (Channel 29 and 7 am on Channel 58). Check out our Green Living Green 101 Segment..
Sasha Windes
Sasha is a co-founder of Greenshops.com, Inc. A member of the Bakersfield community since she was 3 years old, Sasha spent many years working in the real estate industry before entering the green sector. Her real estate experience ranges from development, titles, and mortgages. She and her husband opened a California mortgage company that today is one of the top Kern County lending businesses. What launched her into the green industry was quest to find a remedy for her two children who struggled with asthma and allergy symptoms. This was followed by rashes and eczema breakouts on her daughter and constant sickness in the family. After repeated visits to the doctors with no solution in sight, she decided to start her own research realized that chemicals in everyday products that she was bringing into the home were likely the culprit of her family’s illnesses. After many changes to her own home environment, the children's symptoms disappeared completely. She knew that she needed to do something to help other parents experiencing the same frustrations. That is when Sasha decided to use her entrepreneurial expertise to help build an online retail store that both promotes green purchasing while educating consumers through the process.
In addition to launching the retail side of Greenshops.com, Inc., in 2009 Sasha also began providing consulting services when the Greenshops founders partnered with Green Living Consulting. She has worked with a variety of businesses including the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce to assist them in their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Also in 2009, Sasha became a certified Green Building Professional. Sasha is an active participant of the Keep Bakersfield Beautiful’s education and recycling sub-committees. She is a public speaker in environmental education for school children and many other local and national events. For example, in 2010 Sasha was a speaker at the Entrepreneur Day at Bakersfield College, the Clean Energy Expo as well as the Women’s Business Conference. In 2010 Sasha was recognized as one of the Leaders of Mom’s in Business in 2009, as well as, being profiled on Channel 17 for growing businesses in Kern County. Sasha is one of the green experts on KGET/KBAK weekly Green Living Green 101 Segment.
In 2010, Sasha founded a non-profit called Don’t Trash Me as a way to provide assistance to businesses and schools who want to increase their environmental education. The non-profit is now a driving force behind the the Certified Green Business Kern County, Sahsa also plan to work with schools to increase their environmental education through the non-profit.
Jennifer Jordan
Jennifer is a co-founder of Greenshops.com, Inc. A retired professional dancer and world famous Radio City Rockette in NYC, Jennifer relocated in 2002 to Bakersfield and began a career in real estate. Using her personal skills as an entertainer, she quickly created one of the top selling teams in Kern County, where the Ball Jordan team sold over $65 million over a short four-year time period. In 2006 she transitioned to the green sector after obtaining her eco-broker certification and working with green builders on sustainable design/construction. Jennifer saw that Bakersfield lacked the educational foundation for sustainable building and she formed a group to bring the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) to Kern County in hopes that this would give them the platform they needed.
After getting her feet wet in the sustainable building and real estate sector, Jennifer realized that there was more to green then just infrastructure. She began to educate herself on how daily practices and products play a major role in our personal health and the environment. After instituting changes in her own home and experiencing positive results, she joined forces with Sasha to bring her own knowledge and experience to others through Greenshops.com Inc. Greenshops.com’s sales have increased in a down economy since it opened its doors almost 3 years ago. This is a true example and model of corporate stewardship effectively working in a small business atmosphere. Realizing that there was more work to be done on the education side of the business, Jennifer sought out founder of Green Living Consulting in 2009 to expand the companies services, including working on the business side as well as with individual home owners and families to adopt green practices in every work and home life. Since then, Jennifer has worked with a range of businesses including the Smithsonian National Zoo, The House of Sweden, Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, and large non-profit groups.
Jennifer also serves as a green living correspondent on KBAK/KBFX weekly Green Living Green 101 Segment.. She is a recognized speaker with engagements at such events as: Women’s Business Conference, Kern Economic Development Corporation Energy Summit, Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce and many more. She is passionate about educating her local business community about the benefits of sustainable living and is currently developing an educational series for Keller Williams Realty where she will empower local realtors and offer them the education that was lacking while she was in the business.
Adrienne Spahr
Adrienne joined the Greenshops.com, Inc. Team in 2009 after founding Green Living Consulting, LLC in 2007. With 16+ years of educational, professional and volunteer experience in environmental issues, environmental policy, sustainable development, and urban planning, Adrienne has developed a long‐standing commitment to promoting eco-awareness. Adrienne obtained a B.A. in environmental Studies from the University of Colorado, where she led the Student Environmental Action Coalition and worked for the Sierra Club. Even when working on non‐environmental issues, Adrienne has maintained a strong commitment to living green in her personal life. Seeing positive results from a healthier, more sustainable way of life she was inspired to develop a business that helps others achieve a similar realization. Adrienne developed a systematic tool to assess the "greenness" of a business or organization's operations and third‐party certification program. For individuals, she created a straightforward green living checklist to help people identify practical and affordable green actions they can take in their daily lives to live greener for their own health and that of the planet. In less than two years, Adrienne has grown Green Living Consulting into a bi‐coastal company with a diverse set of clients ranging from small restaurants and food services companies; to software, graphic design, accounting, and architecture firms; to schools and the National Zoo.
